Right Up My Alley....

I was SO excited about this post over at To Reflect His Glory today!! It turns out thatCallapidderdays is sponsoring this challenge called Fall into Reading.

The idea is to list all those books you intend to read this Fall. There's a prize that will be selected at random at the end. You know what, though? It's not about the prize, for me. It's about the fact that I need to take the time to do the very thing I LOVE and the very thing that is my PASSION! I am hoping that some of you will join me.

Since I'm a Reading Specialist who is EXTREMELY far behind on her reading (both personally and professionally), I thought I'd jump in with the group. I went right to my bedside table, brought all my books out to the living room, and took this picture: This is only a SMALL portion of my "To Be Read" books. I have many more at work that are waiting in line.
I'll delineate here:

Non-fiction (at home)

1. Ending Your Day Right: Devotions for Ending the Day Right by Joyce Meyer

2. My Bible--no, I don't get to really READ it everyday. It's something that I know is important and that deserves so much priority.

3. Having a Mary Heart In a Martha World by Joanna Weaver. - If you've read my blog at all, you know I NEED this book!! The problem is, I've been a bit too "Martha" lately to actually sit down and READ the thing!!!!

4. What Really Matters for Struggling Readers by Richard Allington - I've read this before, but this is an updated version of it. This book directly impacts the population we serve at my school and thus impacts the job I do every single day.

Non-fiction (at work)

5. Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi - This book has intrigued me since it came out. It is a very deep read and I have had it in my pile. I finally picked it up the other day and am trying to read it a little chunk at a time. It would be a great reading group book. Every time I read a chunk, I want to talk to someone else about it.

6. Literacy Leadership: Six Strategies for People Work by Donald A. McAndrew - We received this book at one of our recent literacy meetings. We each read a portion and shared our portion. This definitely made me want to read the rest of it and really dig into it. It is a keeper that could impact my job for sure.

7. Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction by Isabell Beck and margaret G. McKeown. I'm going to be conducting a book study group on this book in the very near future. I guess it'd be nice if I picked it up and previewed it, right??

Fiction (at home)

The following books are in my stack in the photo above:

8. the devil wears prada by Lauren Weisberger - OK, I admit it just intrigued me a bit. A friend read it and whet my appetite.

9. Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden - I've always wanted to read this. I bought it in a 2-for-1 sale not long ago. It's been closed in my pile since then.

10. The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd - I wanted to read it because I LOVED Secret Life of Bees. I talked to my cousin, Lynn, about it and she said she didn't really like it as much as "Bees"...I think that's why I didn't dive right in. It's amazing what the "blessing of a book" or "not blessing of a book" means to a reader, isn't it?

11. Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd - I REALLY loved it and want to read it again!!!!

12. The Rescue by Nicholas Sparks - I put these away when I got weepy around the time of DS 1's high school graduation. I think I am about ready emotionally to handle a new Sparks' book.

13. The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks - See my comment above.

Books that were loaned to me and recommended by friends:

14. Angelas Ashes by Frank McCourt - A friend loaned me this months ago. It has gone virtually untouched.

15. Teacher Man by Frank McCourt - Also given to me by the same friend. I WILL get through this book!!

16. Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson - A friend recommended this to me after she read it and was ready to put it in our book swap basket at work. There it sits, at work, waiting!

OK, I am definitely challenged and motivated to get started. Maybe I'll finish a couple this weekend!! If you want to join in, hurry over to Callapidderdays and sign up!!

Happy Reading!!

Oh hooray! (Thanks for stopping by and for the shout-out in your post. ;) )
Great list! I am intrigued by quite a few of these books.
Okay, how is it that you get paid to read?! I always tell myself that I should be an editor or something. (If there's a typo in a book, I catch it. Then I have to regroup and realize that we're all human and continue on with my reading - teehee.) I wanna READ for a living!! :)
I'd be very interested in reading Reading Lolita in Tehran with you. Should I add it to my list and we can read it at the same time? :)
I've been interested in reading Memoirs too, but just haven't yet because I've been feeling a very strong pull towards Christian Living "stuff". :)
I'd probably be with you on the Nicholas Sparks books. I'm SO affected by *stuff* in general. You know I sobbed at a Garfield Christmas cartoon once, don't you? :) Seriously.
And I totally agree, it is so not about the contest at all. I mean, sure, the prize would be nice but I'm reading anyway - just 'cause I love it!! :)
Thanks again for stopping by. I actually came over from your Thursday Thirteen comment, but saw this first and well, you know...
:)

Wow - that is quite a list! Looks great - lots of variety. Several people have recommended "Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World" to me - I look forward to seeing how you like it. Thanks for joining the challenge!

I'm interested in hearing about the Mary Heart in a Martha World book too. Want to read Devil Wears Prada after seeing movie, that's backwards! The Patterson book is a pretty easy read. LOVED Secret Life of Bees! Sparks is good, also LOVED the Wedding! Yes those might make you weepy!

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World is a wonderful book! I really enjoyed it. I also really liked The Secret Life of Bees, though it's not the typical genre that I read. Enjoy!

I've wanted to read the Mary/Martha book for a long time. Great list!

What a great list--and a hefty one, too:)

Several of these books could've been on my list: I have the James Patterson one somewhere in my nightstand; I just now remembered it! I haven't read it yet, but it looked good.

I started Angela's Ashes once but never finished it, and I loved Memoirs of a Geisha. I recently read The Devil Wears Prada, but beware--the language is REALLY rough. I had to read it with one eye closed;)

I would add Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas to the emotional saga of a Sparks book. We used to live in the areas he writes about, so that makes it special. Keep the tissues handy! I just recently looked at Reading Lolita in Tehran. I might have to add that.
Good luck and have fun!

Wow, what a great list! I adored "The Wedding", I think it's my favorite Sparks book along with "The Notebook". I too loved "Secret Life of Bees" and have held off on reading "Mermaid Chair" and others because I also heard they were not as good! I bought "Devil Wears Prada" at a recent library sale, but didn't add it to my challenge list. My slogan each and every day is "so many books, so little time!" :)

Definitely read Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas, but have some kleenex nearby just in case :)

Happy Reading, and Happy Fall!!!

I keep seeing Nicholas Sparks books listed on many -- I am going to have to check out one of his.

There are many intriguing books there!

A Mary Heart in a Martha World remains one of my favorites - I use bits of it now and then for church talks and reference points. You will love it!

And I really enjoyed Reading Lolita in Tehran - such a great insight into women of the Middle East, I think, and also wonderful to learn about a country's history that I personally was quite unfamiliar with before.

Enjoy!!!

I have loved all the Sparks books and The Rescue was excellent. I agree with your Mom about the Mermaid Chair. I don't know, it was just a let down after Bees, but that is just my opinion.

Thanks for stopping my blog!

Let me know when you start "Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World" so I'll try and start it the same time also. I've heard so many good things about it. I also loved Memoirs of a Geisha - read it last year for book club. All the Nicholas Sparks books are ones I haven't read by him, but love all the other books I've read that he has written. Happy Reading this fall!

Really good list! I've been thinking that "Reading Lolita.." is a book I should read. Let us know what you think as you're reading. Maybe I will put it on my next reading challange.
Happy reading!

I'm in the process of adding Reading Lolita in Tehran to my Fall Into Reading post. I'm also adding Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World. :)
