My school has an arts focus. We teach our kids drama and dance in addition to music and visual arts. We also have a violin program that starts in second grade. DS 4 goes to my school and decided that he'd like to do violin this year. Today we brought home the violin.
It's just the two of us home tonight. So, I am the audience. I don't think he is going to be your average violin player. Nope. He wants to play the movements that are FAST and use ALL the strings at once. Can you say fingernails on the chalkboard on steroids?
Remember that this is the musician who is confident that he already knows how to play stringed instruments. He has been playing his Father's guitar with great zeal since he was a toddler. He really plays and sings with confidence.
So, here I sit getting my fourth "concert" of the night. He plays into the mirror so he can see his form. The bow is tightened up. The violin is working fine. So are my ears!
He's happy and I KNOW music education can make a great difference in the lives of young children. In fact, there is much research to show this to be true.
Hey, considering his dream the other night (that he was Albert Einstein)...I wonder if tonight he'll dream he is Bach or Beethoven? Hey, it could happen! And, if it does, he could thank a teacher (and his family who listened to these first few screeches--I mean notes)!!
