The first one came from a person who attends our last church. She and her husband were in our home several times. He was a leader while my DH was pastoring there. They were very special to us. When I opened the card, I noticed it only had HER name on it. I had DS 2 call a friend down there and sure enough, he had died this summer.
I was SO sad! Of course, I was sad that he died. I was sad for her. But I was also sad that we are THAT disconnected in some ways. I wish I had known. I am sure DH and I would have been there to remember this sweet man's life.
Yesterday, I received one with a name I did not recognize on the return label. It was rather thick and from my hometown, so I thought "maybe it's a friend who's reconnected with me and married or something." I honestly didn't know. It wasn't until I saw the woman's first name along with her two sons on the card that I realized she has also "lost her husband". She has either gone back to a maiden name or remarried. Now I have no idea if they divorced or if he, too, passed away. But, it's still sad to me.
Like most people, I love the "good news" update letters and cards with the expected signatures on them. But these cards that immediately "feel wrong"...because they scream loss...make me downright sad.

yes, I know exactly what you mean! So often those cards reveal a cry for help and prayer and heartbreak ... along with good news and well wishes.
Thank God for your sweet sensitive spirit that loves deeply!
Merry Christmas!
I know exactly what you are feeling.
I was down the week after Thanksgiving because I watched for a card that wouldn't come. My Aunt Millie's (she was my mom's cousin but older so we called her "aunt" out of respect) Christmas card was the first one I'd receive after Thanksgiving. It made me sad to think about another person's card coming first.
Yes I can understand this Susan..seems like these are the people that we only hear from once a year!! I just don't know what it would be like without my husband and I know you feel the same way.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
Yes I know that kind of sadness. I get like that when i go into my box of memories and I read christmas cards, birthday cards and letters from old friends that I no longer have much to do with. I could imagine how sad it would be when you hear sad news like this. Well God Bless you and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!
I wrote my mom's Christmas letter. She is 82 and has about 30 cards she gets out. She says it's hard out living your friends. So sorry for the sad news from your friends. I pray for you daily and so glad your son is doing well in the military. I know you miss him.
