It was a simple statement...

My youngest, 10-yr-old DS 4, made a statement out of the blue on our ride home from school yesterday. "I think I know where I want to live." Knowing the value of conversation, and just a tad curious, I asked, "Where's that?"

He replied, "Right here in (our town). I like it here. There are beaches and everything you could ever need."

Knowing that he's heard at least one of his brothers make the same statement, and thinking that was it I said, "Yeah, you're right. It is a nice place to live."

Then he said the thing that nearly brought my car to a stop, "Like our house. I think I could live right in our house until I'm say...25 or something."

I had to bite my tongue so I didn't ask the question that I was thinking, "And so where are your Dad and I going to live?"

This is the one that keeps hinting at never leaving. He thinks he's going to college online and living at home. He promises me on a regular basis that he "won't leave me." I have to smile and say, "I'm so glad!"

Don't get me wrong, I love my boys--all of them. But I also love thinking there might be a light at the end of the tunnel and that my nest will empty out to the place where they are bringing their families to come visit us someday.

But I'm honestly starting to wonder if the older three will be coming back to visit their parents and their younger brother!

That is so funny. Don't we love the naive thoughts of our children. They THINK they want to always live with us until they get older... (thank GOODNESS!) I had one that wanted to be homeschooled all her life and never planned on leaving me. Yes, she did! Is married and now expecting her first child, and thankfully moved out!
I love my empty nest. I love seeing them come and I love seeing them go.... (as long as they come back again soon!)

Even if... they never come home. Don't think for one second that they don't love you. I never went back to my childhood home. That's because my mom had done such a great job preparing me to survive in this world. I have no advice for the stay at home guy. Count your blessings.

Well - we are in a time where children are staying home longer. ;)

DS2 and DD3 both tell me on a regular basis that they are never going to leave me. There's still time yet. And if that fails my beloved and i will just up and move one night and not leave a forwarding address. :D

I think it's really cool when children are comfortable enough to say things like that though.

ha! Love that he likes his HOME enough to want to stay for a very long time. A couple weeks ago one of our family friends was lamenting on facebook how much she missed her youngest daughter that had just gone off to college. And I made a comment that I think my mom peeled away from the curb when she dropped me off at my first year of college, because she'd had kids in the house for something like 37 years. And then my mom left a comment that said, "She's not kidding. It was 0-60 in about 3 seconds. I was driving toward that infamous light at the end of the tunnel".

Thanks everyone!

Jill, your story CRACKED ME UP! I can definitely picture myself doing that. I love 'em, truly I do. I just figured out that it won't be quite 37 years for me...I hope! It'll be like 31 though!! AGH!!!! I. need. LIGHT!

We have one left now (he's 13). When his next elder sibling moved out, I took over the bedroom in about 7 seconds and turned it into my craft room, complete with shelves and cabinets. No going back now. Darn! ;-)

Not to worry -- your youngest will want his independence someday.

Love your blog!
