I truly do like a good PB&J sandwich every now and then. I have my favorite peanut butter (Jif-Reduced Fat-Creamy) and my favorite jelly (Smuckers Grape). Add a nice cup of cold milk, and I am suddenly eight or nine or ten again. But, around the second week of school, I really hate what they represent. You see, the school lunch program is a federally funded program. It is designed so that all children can get a well-balanced meal at lunch time (regardless of socio-economic status). Normally, an elementary school lunch consists of a "main dish", vegetable, fruit, and milk. Occasionally there is a roll or something thrown in there as well.
But, on day seven of school, things CAN change for you. If you are a child who has a parent that neglected to fill out the application for free/reduced lunch OR you are a child of a parent who simply isn't responsible enough to hand you your lunch money, YOU are no longer "entitled" to the lunch that everyone else gets. Nope. YOU get PB&J. And for good measure, they'll add the milk! One sandwich and a milk.
Now, picture every five year old you've ever known. They're little. They have interesting thought processes. But the beginning of school is one GIANT training ground for them. Many of them think the people in the lunchroom are "giving" them a lunch everyday. In fact, these are the kids who genuinely LIKE their school lunches. They certainly have little or no understanding of "accounts" and paperwork and applications for free/reduced lunch. I'm not even sure they understand the "IOU" slip they get when they haven't paid.
Add to this picture what I "got" to see and do today. For every child who fits in the category I described above, the scenerio goes like this.
1. Pick up my milk.
2. Tell the lady whether I want macaroni and cheese or a ham and cheese sandwich.
3. She adds carrots and a roll to my meal.
4. I get to pick out a fruit. I can choose from a banana, pineapple cup, or grapes. I choose grapes.
5. I go to the lady to pay and put in my PIN number.
6. The lady at the "money table" announces, "NOPE. You don't have any money left. You have to have peanut butter and jelly."
7. She picks up your tray and returns it to the first lady who gave you all the stuff to begin with.
8. She brings you a tray with ONE measly sandwich on it and smiles at you when she says, "Remind Mom to send money in with you tomorrow." And then she sends you to join your class while THEY eat mac&cheese and/or their ham&cheese sandwich.
Can you imagine the devastation? Can you imagine the confusion? Can you imagine if that is the ONLY "real" meal that child will get today? Can you imagine what happens when a child has no "Mom" at home? Can you imagine what it feels like to be the "most" responsible person in your house and yet be shorter than everyone else and basically ignored?
Yep, MOST days, I like PB&J.
Today, however, is not one of them!

That could really ruin a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich for a kid, couldn't it? It's hard to believe we can treat others with so little dignity and respect.
Grr!
The heck of it is that the tray of food originally given to that little guy will end up in the dumpster. How incredibly MEAN does it get?
S..what a great interpretation of that situation. How about sending it to the newspaper so that ALL the parents, taxpayers, etc could see how critical an issue it can be and somehow funding be provided. I know we should be thankful that they at least get the PB&J...but what devastation! By the way, I love mine on toast so the peanut butter can melt..and the guava jelly is warm! Oh the calories!

Oh that brings tears to my eyes. I had NO idea!!!! For goodness sake at least check the "money" situation before giving the child a tray and THEN taking it away. That really adds injury to insult and pain upon pain.
Susan
Someone should be sitting at the BEGINNING of the line and check each child's name to see if they have credit or whatever BEFORE they go through all of that choosing and then have to end up with "just PB&J"..These kids are just little!! That is just not right!! Sandy
That makes me very angry!!! No child should be treated that way, especially when they are too young to understand the 'process'. I think they should make note of which children did not have lunch money and notify the parent or guardian.
Makes me want to cry!
I was thinking the same as Bass Player's Wife...they will just throw the original tray of food out. And then you hear story after story of governmental waste....$200 toilet seats, etc. How sad.
It's funny you should mention this because it is a bone of contention for me. This actually happened to my daughter last year in middle school and it infuriated me. However at her school it is either PP&J or cheese because of the peanut allergy situation that seems to have run rampant with this generation of kids. Anyway...your point was well said and I am behind you 100%. My daughter generally brings her lunch everyday except Friday..pizza day..but every now and then there is a miscalculation with her lunch account. Thankfully at the middle school level they all have each other's back and share bits and pieces of their lunches so their friend can have a 'meal'. And truly...what about the child whose only meal was supposed to be that hot lunch.. Oh my, let me get off my soap box...I can't say it any better than you ;)
Oh my goodness--I didn't know schools did that. Small children, in particular, could never understand. Something needs to change, I'm telling you. How cruel.
Oh this just makes me ill. Truly turns my tummy in knots. Those precious little kids should not be treated so poorly. Lord knows, there is a better way the school system/government could handle this situation. Breaks my heart.
Meant to add, I would probably go broke if I was a teacher and saw this happening. I would most likely end up buying lunches for many of my students, as I could not sit by and watch this. I am just as tender hearted as those kiddos, LOL.
Oh that's awful, even being the PB&J girl that I am. I had to sit next to a guy in class who came in with crackers and cheese. No bag. Just carried the crackers and cheese. Sat them on his desk. That was lunch. I'll never forget it and my mom was impressed when I asked her what we could do. (This was 2nd grade)
Its awful Susan, it really is. I couldn't believe the prepackaged things they called lunches where I taught.
I was also thinking the same as Susan, check the money situation before letting them get their meal...
This stuff makes me so mad. How can we as a society let stupid stuff like this happen.
A piece of paper can cause a kid to have a junk meal, and a traumatic experience.
I should of gone into Politics and changed this...
Nothing a good high kick to the head can't fix ;-P

FROM DAD:
Sus,
You've defined the problem(s)very well.
Each of your "Blogger Buddies" have shown they understand and are concerned about the issue and do not tolerate it and the disrespect that goes with it.
I have another view to add:
THE GOVERNMENT ISN'T SOMEBODY ELSE, IT'S "WE, THE PEOPLE". WE NEED TO LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND ASK OURSELVES: "WHAT HAVE I DONE TO SOLVE, OR HELP TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM".
While we are empathetic for the children, we are also showing signs of our own weaknesses, to hold the right folks accountable and demand answers and solutions.
Yes, we watch, with disdain, the many things that "need fixed" in our country, but are too willing to sit on the sidelines and not get in the game to do our best to change the outcome.
Love Ya' Lots!
DAD
Exactly "dad". lol
---we should have never given our authority & therefore our 'responsibility' to help those in need, over to the gov't. to begin w/! IMO
Poor little guys....
Man that story just breaks my heart...
That's just not fair. :(
Awwwwwwwww.... poop!
Susan,
I hate this too - makes me very upset. But I think what makes me more upset is how the lunch ladies treat the kids. Can't they take care of this another way? And how many ham and cheese sandwiches are thrown away each day? Why can't they have the better meal? Oh, this makes me so sad.
you know.. one time, the school did this to my child... and I went over the edge.. and you know why?
old wounds... because there were many times I went to school without lunch.. or money..
so it sure dug up the old pain and memories..
so now, we pay for our son's lunch for the whole year..
I wonder why they can't just let them eat and then let us pay..
I am wondering what kind of wounds are being created...
but they have their policies..
So after the whole wound licking of myself...
I made sure my son was ok.. to the point my son said, "Mom, are you counseling me?"
yes.. I guess I was.. I was trying to heal my own wound through him...
oh the world we live...
