Oh, oh oh on the radio...

I love music. All kinds of music. Well, maybe rap and screamo is an exception...but even those I can appreciate sometimes. I mostly listen to the Christian radio, but I occasionally channel surf to listen to other genres. This morning, I was surfing and this new song came on by Brooks and Dunn. It caught my ear right away:

That anchor man says the fight began somewhere in the Middle East.
The world prays for peace.
There's a single mom just got laid off when she lost a job
to some foreign hands in some faraway land.
Last night in Oklahoma some twister took thirteen
and they're praying that they findthe missing three.
God must be busy.

I almost did a double take when I first heard these words. I found myself talking to the radio, "WHAT did you just say?" The song continued...

That highway sign went from slow ahead to traffic's dead.
Thought it couldn't get worse than that Amber Alert. They say she's 4,
Colorado plates, headed out-of-state in a Chevy van.
It's hard to understand.
You can see it in the faces of all those highway strangers,
they're praying that Godkeeps that girl from danger.
God must be busy.

My comment, as Brooks and Dunn continued singing, was "Surely they are going to bring this around and tell the listener the REAL lesson, that GOD'S NOT BUSY!" If you'd have been inside my car, you'd have been shocked to hear me hollering at the medal knobs and lighted display like it was going to change something. The song continued...

And I know in the big picture I'm just a speck of sand
and God's got better things to do than look out for one man.
I know he's heard my prayers cause he hears everything,
he just ain't answered back or he'd bring you back to me.
God must be busy.

There's no need sharing the rest of the lyrics with you. The message doesn't change. What happened to me in my car, though, was the sudden realization that there are mixed messages all around us. I felt the urge to roll the windows down and shout...GOD'S NOT TOO BUSY!

I'm sorry. God has no answering machine. The Bible says, "He hears me when I call." It doesn't say "Leave a message and I'll get back to you." It says, "He knows the number of hairs on my head...and yours...and yours...and his...and hers." If He has time to care about the number of hairs on my head, He's NOT TOO BUSY. It says to "Be anxious in NOTHING because HE cares." It says, "He will not leave us or forsake us." It says that He is LOVE. He's the giver of peace. I could go on and on and on...

I believe He's there in the Middle East. He's present when the single Mother loses her job to the global economy. He cares deeply for the little girl who is taken from her family in a senseless crime. He walks through every storm of life with us...calming the waves both figuratively and literally. He helps us when we are lost. And He never ever ever has better things to do than to "look out for one man" (or woman). Nope. THIS time, this duo's got it wrong. Dead wrong.

I could not go another blogging minute without doing the very thing I was wishing the lyricist would magically do on my radio today...bring the message around...because when we, in our human eyes, THINK God's too busy (and admittedly I have before), we have to think again.

For the truth is that GOD'S NOT TOO BUSY for anything or anyone. And that's a promise you can hang your hat on!

IS that a Christian band? I think your point is fantastic, but I wonder if the point they are trying to make is that it seems like God is too busy? I can see how it is so frustrating to hear something like that though.

I, for one, am really glad that God is not to busy for me.

Wow... I haven't heard that song yet... but are you sure the message was God is TOO busy... or was it that all these things are KEEPING God busy? Brooks & Dunn are not a Christian band -- but Country music in general is usually pretty POSITIVE on God. I'm going to have to try to hear this song now... Have you written to them? I would!

I am appalled! I think you should see if they have a website and voice your opinion.
I totally agree with you, GOD IS NOT BUSY! He always has time for His children.

AMEN!!!! Thanks for taking this on. I would probably never been aware of this song but I'm glad you pointed it out. Yes, no wonder so many are confused there are so MANY false messages being sent. I'm glad you do such a good job of getting the WORD out with a clear message.

I was also thinking at first that the song was saying that God is hard at work on our behalf, that he's not sitting around doing nothing. But then I read that last verse. Ouch.

Way to go DAD!! he is right!! I remember way back in the 70's the Beatles were saying that God is dead. I had sang a song at church during that time that was called, "God is not dead"..the lyrics that i remember were.."God is not dead, because He lives in my heart"...Crazy people anymore. There are a lot of those "bad messages" out there. I am glad though that it made you mad...you know there are so many who will just sing it right along and not think a thing about it...We need to be mad as Christians..

I always thought the song meant God was busy watching over all the situations they are singing about...not that He was too busy to realize those things. Also, I think they're saying that God doesn't immediately answer prayers sometimes and, when He does answer, it's not always the answer we want. Honestly, I was raised by a loving, Christian mother who often said, "God's too busy right now helping children who are sad and hurting. You don't need to be asking him to help get your shoes on." I've often found myself in the minority by holding the belief that God gives us the wonderful gift of free will. He helps those who help themselves. So, while someone is praying to Him for a close parking space, He is busy helping those in greater need.

Amen Susan! Amen.

Just because God does not answer the way we want to immediately does not mean He is not at work, or that He doesn't hear our prayers.

There is no better place to be, than in His arms, and talking in His ear.

Jill and Others: I agree with you that this "could" be the message, BUT God is NEVER too busy. He knows what we need and want and long for no matter how small. Besides the lyrics in this song talk about some pretty deep and heavy things. So I think that we DO have to consider that.

By the way, the lyricist DOES "allow" God to answer ONE prayer in this song, for the return of the little girl. The lyric says: "They found that little girl.
She was soaking wet,
half scared to death
on the side of some road.
Them prayers work, you know." It's almost like "some prayers work, and some don't.." AND "God must be busy with this one, but He doesn't have time for mine." It's not OK.

Hi Susan, I am so glad that you take a strong stand on this song and also that your dad is helping you to overcome the meaning of the lyrics.

I got back home today at 4pm and have much to do around here to clean up and get my house back in order.

Thanks for my card in the mail regarding my new granddaughter..Have a good week-end. Hugs, Baba

I've disliked that song since I first heard it, but you hit the nail on the head so much better than I could have expressed it myself.

Kudos!

I think Susan can attest to the fact that we have a lot of different views on life and certain aspects of life. While I certainly respect her view and the views of people on here I must disagree with some parts of it. The number one problem I have and have had through out my life is that we has humans have choices, first off. It's simple, don't like it don't listen. The number two issues I have when it comes to music, is that it's just that music, ENTERTAINMENT. I've listened to gangster rap, hard core heavy metal, gospel and country and I take them all for what they are to me, ENTERTAINMENT. Never thought about going out and "gang banging" and never thought about doing drugs and worshipping the devil. I know it's been said on here, but said to me in an email and I think it is so true, "never thought of it in that way". I don't think there's any need to boycott B&D or anything of that sort. My final thought is, sit back, enjoy ENTERTAINMENT for what it is and don't live life SWEATING THE SMALL SRUFF ( thanks DAD! ). Yes I know God is not small stuff and not saying he is, but entertainment is small stuff and ultimately that's what we're talking about here. OK, I'm done rambling and up setting the apple cart.
