Reflections on a Saturday...

Our church is all about outreach.  If you've followed this blog for any time at all, then you know this already.  One of the things we are going to do to reach out globally is a monthly flea market.  So today was the first stab at this little undertaking.

First of all, I am well aware that it's no "little" thing.  There's all the collecting of stuff.  There's the sorting.  Pricing.  Setting up.  Etc. Etc. Etc.  But our church is filled with people who love to give so the team was large for this project.

It was a HUGE success!  I am still no fan of trying to make money 25 cents at a time.  And I really hate it when someone seems to want to bargain down a nickel or so.  But this was a slightly different flavor.  People knew it was for girls in Belize today.  So, in some cases, people even donated EXTRA money than their treasures cost!  I loved that!

Perhaps my favorite story of the day, though came from this little guy.  I do not know him, but isn't he cute??  He came to my table with his two quarters in hand to buy this train.  He was holding it as if he just bought pure gold.  So I walked over and asked him if I could take his picture with it.  He agreed.

I said, "You and Thomas smile!"  He stopped.  Looked at the train.  Looked at me.  Then said:

"He IS smiling already!"

I replied, "OK, you smile then!"  And this is the precious little picture I got.  His Grandmother came over to me just after this little photo exchange and told me that he started preK this week.  When his mother asked him how the first day went, he replied:

"I TOLD Miss A [his teacher] the whole alphabet, my name AND I counted for her AND she still wouldn't let me come home!"  I almost laughed until I cried right there.  I LOVE that little spirit!

On another "garage sale" note.  I was taking money and this lady walked up and said, "Aren't you Susan?"  While checking my mental filing cabinet and trying to figure out WHO she was, I said "yes".  She then said, "I used to cut your hair."  As it registered that she is the lady that cut my hair more than a year ago and I haven't been  back, I wanted to CRAWL UNDER the MONEY TABLE!  No.  I wanted to PAY HER to take her stuff.

Am I the only one who hates to switch hair dressers and feels like it's close to divorce?

The rest of the day has been pretty quiet.  Football is playing in the background.  I'm trying to get the kitchen back together and the boxes put away.  And all is well in our world.

Hope yours is also well!

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I love the little Thomas the Tank buyer; what a cutie!

I've read a couple of your past posts while here and loved the one about the kids starting school. I, too have one in college, one a Jr in High School and two in 2nd & 3rd grade. I could just imagine the emotions behind the scene. Loved that they met at a house and prayed. They can really make us proud sometimes. I'll be back to read. Thanks.

What a cute little boy, and so funny!

I'm with you on the hairdresser thing, it is awkward to run into them after you've "divorced" them, so to speak.

Hope the rest of your weekend is great.

Yes- switching hair dressers is totally like a divorce. I am so blessed that I moved. It gives me a good excuse as to why I never went back to the one I "left" back north. It looks like you had a fun day! Can you believe we still have TWO more days off?? I love it!

Our church has a "similar" but "not" project that we do -- as a matter of fact I'm working it this Thursday. One week each month, for 3 days (Th, F, S) we have the Lutheran Mission Society's COMPASSION TRAILER. It is a garage sale on wheels. But who it benefits is the poor people in our community. They can come to the trailer every month if they like and buy "nice" things (the society is pretty picky about what goes IN the trailer) for next to nothing! As a matter of fact, if they have NO money, they can still take up to 3 items at no charge! Most items are about $1 - a blouse, a pants or a pair of shoes... a piece of furniture might run $3 - I don't think ANYthing is more expensive than that. And there are tons of things UNDER a dollar too!

The trailer is also a place they can come to ask for prayers or spiritual (biblical) guidance... It is a very successful mission, this trailer! And of course, as a congregation, we collect things FOR the trailer too...

As for hair??? I have NO allegiences! I hop hair techs like a butterfly!

Cute little guy! Glad the flea market went well. As for hairdressers...mine is my daughter in law. She only graduated two years ago...so it's a good thing she's a great hairdresser! Don't feel bad about that lady. She didn't have to say anything, and--it's your hair to do with as you please!! :)

Absolutely precious picture! I love it!

You are not alone on the hairdresser guilt front. In fact I ran into my old hairdresser in town just yesterday. I see her at least once every few months. I quit going to her right about the time she was diagnosed with a brain/spinal condition that caused her massive pain. That was obviously not the reason I quit going to her (I happened to find a FABULOUS hairdresser who specializes in curly hair), but I still want to crawl under the nearest car or table every time I see her!

We love exposing our kids to outreach opportunities thru church, etc. Amazing what a blessing WE receive despite the work! Thanks for sharing your blessings.
